Android 4.4 was launched last fall with the introduction of the new Nexus 5 and since then, we’ve seen Android 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 roll out to the Nexus family of devices, with Android 4.4.2 being the version to hit devices from the likes of Samsung and HTC. For a while now, we’ve been hearing about a new version of KitKat to launch, Android 4.4.3 and with this is said to come a number of bug fixes and tightening of nuts and bolts. We’ve seen the 4.4.3 number show up a number of times in the last couple of months and now we’re seeing it on one of Samsung’s developer sites.
A recent Tweet from the Samsung Developers handle on Twitter detailed a problem with ‘ComsumerIrManager’ on devices running Android versions older than Android 4.4.3. Linking to some documentation on a Samsung site, it seems that Android 4.4.3 is pretty much ready to roll out to devices as Samsung must have been working with the code in order to find this sort of bug in the first place. The much-rumored Galaxy S5 Prime is said to be running Android 4.4.3 when it launches and if the device actually exists and makes it to market, it looks like this latest version of KitKat will be onboard.
Android 4.4.3 is said to be launching in the next few months and that it will feature a number of bugfixes and stability fixes, but we’re not holding our breath for any new features or anything like this. Obviously, Nexus devices will be getting this update before any other devices, but as companies like Samsung clearly have access to the code, this is an update that might not take too much longer to reach other devices out there. Hopefully that’s the case, as bug fix releases are much more important than full upgrades and really, no Android update should take all that long to roll out. We shouldn’t have too much longer to wait though, as it sure seems that Google is all but done with this maintenance update.
