In a change from the way they normally announce upcoming chips, Qualcomm announced their next-generation of processors not too long ago. The Snapdragon 808 and 810 – despite their misleading names – are set to be a dramatic improvement over the Snapdragon 805 we’ve all been waiting for to launch later this year. The chips aren’t supposed to hit until the first half of 2015 though, so when we hear that Pantech is already working on a device with the Snapdragon 810 inside, we start to wonder if these chips might be launching a little sooner than we though.
According to Korean media, Pantech is working on yet another Secret Note smartphone, which is set to launch with a 6-inch 2560 x 1440 display, but more important pegged to launch with the Snapdragon 810. In case you missed all the hubub surrounding the Snapdragon 810, you won’t know that the CPU is to be an Octa-Core 64-bit affair from Qualcomm designed around ARM’s big.LITTLE design scheme with four Cortex-A57 cores for heavy lifting and four Cortex-A53 cores to keep ticking along without taking too much juice. The Adreno 430 (set to debut with the Snapdragon 805 soon) is included as well and all-in-all, the 810 is the next big thing for Qualcomm, and their first high-end 64-bit chip.
How can Pantech be already working on a device with this chip then? Well, it’s more than likely that right now these are just design predictions for Pantech, and that the device has yet to hit the prototype stages, but Pantech is a company known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to processors, with a Snapdragon 805 device in the works. No matter how enthusiastic the Korean media outlets get, we’re sure that the next Secret Note from Pantech won’t be arriving until some time in first half of 2015, however if they are already working on it this could mean Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chips could be launching in Q1 rather than Q2 of next year.
