The Sony Xperia M2 has finally been announced to arrive in Canada on Rogers and Fido by the end of May. There is no word on pricing yet, but we would expect it to be a bit less than the top-of-the line devices now selling, say maybe about $200 outright and possibly free on a two-year term. Keep your eye on the Rogers online store for a listing – again, no word on whether it will first go pre-order or directly to a live sale.
The Xperia M2 is the successor to the 4-inch Xperia M – think of it as an Xperia Z2 minus the steroids. It should be a nice entry-level device that should attract a lot of the price-conscious buyers. The M2 keeps the Z2’s glass and metal construction making them look very similar, however, one need only to pick the M2 up to notice the thicker (8.6mm) body and difference in weight. The 4.8-inch qHD display at 960 x 540 resolution is certainly less impressive than its Full HD flagship brother.
Powering the Xperia M2 is a Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The M2 packs a Sony 8MP main Camera with an Exmor RS image sensor and appears to take good pictures, especially in the HDR setting. Sony’s camera app is loaded onboard and includes AR (augmented reality) functionality, Superior Auto, Manual and other shooting modes. Power for the M2 is provided by a 2300mAh battery – down from the 3200 mAh in the bigger Z2. Please also note that the M2 is still running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, not the newer 4.4 KitKat, although Sony promises the update to KitKat. Even though the UI looks a little dated compared with Sony’s upgraded software, the M2 does run the full suite of Sony Apps. With the above specs the applications run fast and smooth on the M2.
Please let us know on our Google+ Page if the Sony Xperia M2 sounds like the device for you. If you are on Rogers or its prepaid cousin, Fido, will you be signing up to get a Sony Xperia M2…as always, we would appreciate hearing from you.
