Sony is posting their earnings for fiscal year 2013 this morning, and they are showing how their smartphones have drastically increased in sales over the past year. Sony sold 33 million in fiscal year 2012, and now 39.1 million in fiscal year 2013. That may not seem like a big jump, but it is an increase which is better than having a decrease in smartphone sales right? However, between the smartphone sales and a successful Playstation 4 launch in 2013, the company still posted a pretty hefty loss of $1.25 billion.
Sony is looking ahead to fiscal year 2014, and stating that they are expecting to sell around 50 million smartphones this year. Which is quite possible for Sony to do, they build some amazing devices, they just don’t have the marketing behind them, and they don’t really sell their devices in the US besides unlocked. Sony really needs to get their flagships on all the US carriers. If they do that, I’m sure they’ll sell way more than 50 million Xperia smartphones this year.
On another note, Sony did see a decline in sales of digital cameras. Going from 17 million in FY2012 to 11 million in FY2013. While TV’s stayed relatively the same at 13.5 million units. It’s not really a surprise to see Sony’s digital camera sales going down since most people are using their smartphones as cameras these days. The only ones really buying cameras these days are those that are photographers, or those like me that take pictures for reviews and such.
