When the Galaxy S5 launched earlier this year, it did so with an interesting new feature called “Download Booster”, and it enabled downloads to be done using both your WiFi connection as well as your 4G connection. Thus, giving you a faster download speed overall. Now, it looks like Samsung is ready to take this quite a bit further with some new technology from their friend Qualcomm in the much rumored Galaxy S5 Prime. As we saw with the Galaxy S4 LTE-Advanced, South Korean wireless networks are capable of some awesome speeds, and if the Galaxy S5 Prime is coming to market, it’s going to be one speedy phone.
As a recent report from ZDNet Korea is saying, the Galaxy S5 Prime could be using the new MDM9635 multimode modem from Qualcomm, which is not only the first built using a 20nm process, but it also supports global carrier aggregation up to 40 MHz for FDD Category 6 and LTE TDD. This, coupled with SK Telecom’s upcoming LTE Advanced network could allow the device to reach speeds of 225mbps for downloads. Which would allow an 800MB file to be downloaded a little under 30 seconds, perfect for those bigger Android games. These sort of speeds would be made possible thanks to carrier aggregation across two different bands.
Apparently, the rumored M8 Prime is to also take advantage of such a modem and could give the Galaxy S5 Prime some stiff competition. The Galaxy S5 Prime is said to feature a more premium build, but if this is to be simply a higher-specced device for faster LTE speeds as the Galaxy S4 LTE-A was, then why change the build entirely? Right now though, both of these 2560 x 1440 devices with beefier specs are just rumor, so we’ve got some waiting to do to see if these devices even make it to market. One thing’s for sure though, with XLTE from Verizon, Spark from Sprint and South Korean networks pushing the limits of LTE, our 4G networks are about to get a fair bit quicker.
