Lately, the talk of the town has been the Sprint/T-Mobile proposed merger. There are plenty for the merger and plenty against, as well as plenty that aren’t sure about it just yet. But so far we have nothing set in stone as the government hasn’t yet approved the deal and the deal hasn’t been announced yet. We’ve only heard from sources of Reuters and the WSJ that the two sides have decided on a deal of $32 billion.
We’ve heard before that John Legere was the front runner for the CEO of the combined companies, thus ousting Dan Hesse the current Sprint CEO. This could be a big deal for this combined company – whatever they decide to call themselves – as we’ve also heard that the company would keep T-Mobile’s initiative, culture and other aspects of the Uncarrier brand. John Legere has led an epic turnaround for T-Mobile in the past year. Going from losing nearly a million customers per quarter to adding nearly 2 million, and in fact last quarter they added more than 2 million. Legere is not your typical CEO by any means. He doesn’t wear a suite and tie, nor does he play nice with the competition. His antics are a bit entertaining at times, but he’s definitely gotten to his competitors.
According to Bloomberg, Legere is a front-runner for CEO of the combined company:
“John Legere, the chief executive officer of T-Mobile who’s known for wearing company-branded shirts and taunting his competitors on Twitter, is likely to run the combined company, according to two people familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the plans are private.”
So a John Legere lead powerhouse of Sprint and T-Mobile. Could they really turn around and make AT&T and Verizon run for their money? There’s a good chance it could. Especially when the combination would be about 104 million customers compared to AT&T and Verizon at 120 million.
