It seems that OEMs are having a hard time keeping their new secret devices a secret and it appears that Meizu has also recently fallen “victim” to this trend. Meizu has reportedly let some information slip out about one of their handsets that is about to be released on Saturday. This information made its way out of China by way of a picture of a leaflet. The leaflet reveals a lot of information about the cheaper of the two devices, the base model of the Meizu MX4. This includes specs, price and even a photo of the device itself. What more could we ask for?
This so called base model is actually quiet powerful. In fact, if the specs that are listed on the leaflet are to be believed, this device could most certainly contend with any smartphone on the market today, and even best quiet a few of them. According to the leaflet, this device packs a 5 inch 1080p screen, not two but 3GB of RAM, and get this, an 8 megapixel front facing camera and a 20.7 megapixel rear camera. Though this camera setup seems to completely outdo many smartphones on the market, a high megapixel count isn’t everything. Though that 20.7 figure seems to be very familiar. I’m only familiar with Sony using this megapixel count and they do supply cameras to other smartphone manufacturers such as One Plus, which also happens to be a Chinese company. Could this be the same 20.7 megapixel camera that is found in the Z1 or even the Z2? If this is the case we can expect some very good performance from this camera.
This brings me to ask the question, does this sound like a “base model” to anyone? This monster of a device even packs in Samsung’s latest processor, the Exynos 5430. The 5430 is Samsung’s first processor to be built on a 20nm process and is reportedly also used in Samsung’s next smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha. So is this really a base model? Maybe it’s just the word base that is bothering me here. The pro version of the Meizu MX4 is reported to have the more powerful Exynos 5433 model which might even outperform the Snapdragon 805 but also has more pixels to push with a screen resolution of 1536×2560. Regardless, the Meizu MX4 base model still seems like a very good buy at, according to the leaflet, only 2499 Yuan or 406 USD. I’m not sure if this device will make it stateside, but the Chinese market is an extremely competitive one and this device might be what Meizu needs in order to move up the ladder in the Chinese smartphone market since the pro model, like the Samsung Galaxy Note series, might prove to be a little bit too large for most consumers with a reported screen size of 5.4 inches.
I would guess that the pro version of the MX4 will definitely cost more but this pricing definitely beats out phones like the Galaxy S5 when it comes to price. I doubt that we’ll see this device stutter on such impressive hardware but we’ll have to wait and see how Flyme 4.0 OS, an Android fork, handles everything. The phone is due to be released next month but we might not have to wait that long for Meizu to release official information about the MX4 models, of which there are reportedly 4 for Meizu has dropped everyone a subtle hint that August 18 will be “a splendid day”.
