Huawei is really starting to make a name for itself, not only in its homeland of China, but Europe as well…we can only hope that they will begin to have more of an influence in the U.S. smartphone market. In an interview with the 21st Century Business Herald, Huawei Device Chairman and Consumer CEO, Yu Chengdong, indicated that he has a “strategy for the future mobile phone business.” That strategy appears to include going down a different path than most China smartphone manufacturers – they want to make premium products and their newest flagship, the Huawei Ascend P7 is the latest evidence. He shared with the reporter, what he considers to be the next three steps in order to make that happen.
For starters, Yu Chengdong says that Huawei will be “necessary to continue [to] do shocking products.” To prove his point, he introduced the reporter to a Huawei Ascend P7 with a sapphire screen and even let the reporter take a knife to the screen…I guess that is shocking! We know that the Ascend P7 is a great device with a 1080p display that is about 5-inches with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot to add additional storage. It also packs a 13MP main camera and a 8MP front-facing camera, which is almost unheard of – talk about a great video chatting experience or a terrific selfie. It runs Huawei’s in-house HiSilicon Kirin 910T processor – a quad-core Cortex-A9 clocked at 1.8GHz, all powered by a 2500mAh battery…but there certainly is no sapphire screen. This may be an indication that a Ascend P7 variant will show up with a sapphire screen, but one thing it does indicate is that sapphire screens will be included in some future Huawei devices.
Yu Chengdong said they must also increase their e-commerce and they are doing just that, having only 30-percent of during the first half of the year, they expect to go up to 50-percent of sales via e-commerce during the second half. He is seeking their “glory,” as he calls it and name recognition for Huawei.
Finally, he said, “Huawei phones are not simply the pursuit of quantity, it will not seek to earn a lot of profit in the short term. Huawei is a marathon type of player in the guarantee on the basis of performance, will tend to the future development and investment, for example, the goal of our brand in the Volkswagen Group will not be popular, at least if Audi, Porsche or become.” It loses a little in the translation, but suffice it to say that they do not want to be a “Volkswagen,” but an “Audi or a Porsche.”
We look forward to Yu Chengdong’s “shocking” products and sapphire screens…hopefully, they will have more of a U.S. presence…please hook up with us on our Google+ Page and let us know if you would like to see more of Huawei…as always, we would love to hear from you.
