Sony Introduces the Xperia M2 Aqua, a Waterproof Mid-Ranger with 4.8-inch Display

While Sony is often thought of as the age-old technology company from the Far East producing excellent, yet expensive smartphones, they do offer some very capable mid-range smartphones. For some time now, Sony has been offering decent devices that offer a fair compromise between build quality, specs and price. Today, they’re adding one more device to this long line of devices, the Xperia M2 Aqua, an Android smartphone that follows in the footsteps of the Xperia Z2 and family with waterproofing and design cues that many will be familiar with. The Xperia M2 Aqua is essentially a waterproof version of the Xperia M2 that launched earlier this year, but there are a few other differences.

Specs wise, we’re looking at the same phone as the Xperia M2, a quad-core 1.2 Ghz Snapdragon 400 powered device with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. As this is a Sony device, there’s good reason to expect a fairly capable camera and the 8-megapixel shooter here shouldn’t disappoint, and there’s also a dedicated camera key on the side here as well. Said camera is an Exmor RS sensor that features HDR as well as other Sony technologies like SteadyShot and more. With a 2,300 mAh battery to last most of the day and then some, it’s clear that the M2 Aqua is designed for everyday use and while the 960 x 540 4.8-inch display could be of higher resolution, Sony is promising very good color reproduction from the display.

Sony is promising the “highest level of waterproofing” you can get in a smartphone and with IP65 and IP68 ratings for both water and dustproofing we’re inclined to believe them. The Xperia M2 Aqua can be plunged to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes and you can use the M2 Aqua to take photos underwater if you so choose to do so. Overall though, the Xperia M2 Aqua isn’t a device much different from the Xperia M2 announced earlier this year. Still, with 4G LTE onboard and a fairly capable Snapdragon 400, the addition of waterproofing is something that many buyers might be looking in their next smartphone. Let’s also not forget that such a device would make a perfect first smartphone for those prone to spilling drinks or dropping pieces of technology where it isn’t supposed to go. According to Sony’s Press Release, the Xperia M2 Aqua will be available in either black or white and start shipping in the Fall of this year throughout Latin America, Europe and the Asia Pacific.
