Just as we told you last week, the LG G Watch has arrived in Videotron as of today for $250. We first heard about the G Watch at the Google I/O Conference at the end of June, along with the other Android Wear device, the Samsung Gear Live. Although it appeared that Google just sprang Android Wear upon us, it had actually been working on it a long time, as Google works towards gaining its own ‘Apple-like’ ecosystem where all devices talk to one another – Notebook, Tablet, Smartphone and Wearables. Google is working hard at the design of their menus and how everything can function together – make changes on your smartphone and when you get home, you can pick up right where you left off on your tablet or notebook. Google is quickly finding out that an ‘open’ system is nice, however, it can lead to many ‘forks in the road’ and cause problems as you grow larger.
The LG G Watch is a nice representation of the Android Wear OS in work – the Android OS that Google designed specifically for all wearables…if not a rather expensive version. The G Watch is very plain and simple in its design – it has a steel back and frame that is completely covered with a polycarbonate top and sides giving it the IP67 water and dust resistance rating. It comes with a standard 22mm silicone-based strap so it can easily be replaced with an aftermarket wristband of your choice. Android Wear is still in its infancy and while there are quite a few great apps available, those too will mature at a very rapid rate. Android Wear is here to stay and will only get better over time and because it is designed by Google with no custom UI, like TouchWiz riding on top, updates should be quick to receive. What is so nice about the G Watch is that it will work with ANY Android smartphone running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean or higher. None of this Samsung only crap – if you have an HTC, LG, or even a Samsung, if it is running Android 4.3 or higher than you qualify.
Another thing to remember is that a smartwatch is simply an extension of your smartphone on your wrist – as a tool to aid you in receiving notifications, an added convenience if you will. It will be years before a smartwatch can actually replace carrying your smartphone around town…although that day will come at some point in time. But they will receive all the same notifications that your smartphone can handle and with Google Now onboard, you can talk to your Android Wear smartwatch and receive feedback. All-in-all pretty cool stuff, but is it worth $250? You may want to wait for the Gear Live or the highly anticipated Moto 360.
