According to a new report by Reuters, world renowned chipmaker Intel plans on joining forces with the watches and fashion accessory retailer Fossil, so they can venture off into the wearable tech world. Its not surprising to see Intel make such a move. When you look at the mobile tech world, you will see that everyone has jumped on that wagon. Not to mention that Intel would probably want to stay true to their “Intel Inside” slogan. The reason for Intel taking this route is because they want to go beyond just the personal computer. Intel wants to explore in new markets such as the internet connected garments like Google Glass and Android Wear. With the growth of smart watches on the rise, this would be a great opportunity for Intel to take a leap into a new world where they can expand.
The role Fossil will play in this collaboration is with the wearable tech products Intel plans to deliver. Not only will they be behind the look and feel but they are going to help Intel’s venture capital arm as they are in need of investments. The goal for this collaboration is to innovate wearable technology and also grow Intel’s market. While Intel has this venture going on, the chip maker has been working with the design company Opening Ceremony. Together, they are going to launch a bracelet that contains semi-precious gems, communications features and wireless charging.
From the looks of things, Intel has a lot going on as they try to enter this newly created market. Intel chips are found everywhere so it shouldn’t be a question of why they want to step into this market and help innovate and create. Seeing some new fashionable smart watches coming from Intel should really be interesting to see being that they specialize in creating chips. But since they do make chips, these watches should have some great hardware under the hood. If I had to guess, Intel may have these watches run on Android Wear which should be exciting to see. Until then, we will have to wait until Intel starts leaking images of their soon to be wearable devices.
