The first Samsung smartphone to use a metal frame, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, was released last month to appease the disappointed Samsung Galaxy S5 ‘people’ waiting for that metal phone. The only thing is, the fanfare about the Galaxy Alpha died pretty quickly when the specifications and pricing was announced – less display in size and resolution, less camera, a smaller battery, but a larger than expected price. It definitely looks nicer than the Galaxy S5, but the critics were hoping for a copy of the Galaxy S5, only with a metal frame or body – the Galaxy Alpha was not what they were expecting. Samsung went for a more sophisticated look, not a metal version of the Galaxy S5.
Not much was said about the availability of the Galaxy Alpha – except that it would not be making its way to the U.S. – we heard there would be a UK launch sometime in mid-September…they started taking orders for them at the end of August. We are happy to announce that there will be a Canadian release on both Bell and Virgin Mobile sometime in late September – below, see the order page from Bell. It will set you back $149.95 on a two-year contract and $699.95 to purchase it outright.
The press release says that it will be available in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White and Frosted Gold starting September 26 via Bell and Virgin Mobility and in the coming months from additional carriers, however, Bell’s website only allows you to pre-order the Black or White models at this time. Wade Oosterman, President of Bell Mobility said, “Bell is proud to be first in Canada to offer the new GALAXY Alpha, which will enable customers to take full advantage of Bell’s faster 4G LTE network. With its large Super AMOLED screen and long battery life, Samsung’s newest GALAXY is the perfect device to watch mobile TV at home or on the go.”
A quick reminder – besides the metal, sculptured sides, the Galaxy Alpha comes with a 4.7-inch 720p display, a Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory, a 12MP main camera, a 2.1MP FFC, a 1,860mAh battery and Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
