NTT Docomo is Japan’s leading cellular carrier claiming to serve in excess of 60 million customers. With this in mind you would expect NTT Docomo to make sure they get their hands on all the latest devices when available. Today NTT Docomo has begun advertising three new (to the Japanese market) Samsung devices. The first Samsung device set to join the Docomo family is the hybrid (outdoor variant) of Samsung’s Galaxy S5, the Galaxy S5 Active. Yes, this is not a ‘new’ device as such as it was released in the US back in May but until now had not been previously available in Japan. The Galaxy S5 Active is an outdoors version of the normal S5 with a more rugged appearance and additional features such as an atmospheric pressure gauge. The device is also waterproof and dustproof, offers a 5.1″ display, comes with a quad-core Snapdragon processor (clocks at 2.5GHz) and a 16MP rear camera. According to the Docomo listing the S5 Active is expected to launch in Japan on October 4th and will be available in Camo Green and Titanium Grey.
The second device joining Docomo is the much newer and highly controversial Galaxy Note 4 sibling, the Galaxy Note Edge. This device offers a curved Edge display which allows users to see notifications without looking at the main screen. In addition, the device offers a 5.6″ Quad HD display with a 1440 x 2560 resolution. Inside the device comes loaded again with a quad-core Snapdragon processor (clocked at 2.7GHz) and again a 16 MP rear camera. Recently Samsung did announce this is a ‘limited edition concept’ device and as such it is not clear how long it will be available in any market let alone Japan. In terms of when for the Edge, the listing page on Docomo suggests it will be available sometime between late October and mid-November.
Finally, the last Samsung device to join Docomo will be the Samsung Tab S 8.4″. This tablet was originally launched by Samsung back in July and as the name suggests is an 8.4″ tablet (2560 x 1600 resolution). In addition, the S 8.4 comes loaded with a quad-core Snapdragon processor (clocks at 2.3GHz) and an 8 megapixel rear camera. The Tab 8.4 will actually be the last to land in Japan with the listing suggesting an expected release date of mid-December. So if you are Japan based, this will be your trio of Samsung offerings available in the run-up to the holidays. At present Docomo do not list the prices and so we will have to wait a little longer to see if the cost makes any of these devices any more appealing.
