Sony came with its guns fully loaded when they entered the IFA Berlin yesterday when they announced five new devices – Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia E3, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact and their newest SmartWatch 3. The phones and tablet will be available in Canada, later this year and pricing will be based on each target market.
The Xperia Z3 was certainly expected, as was the Z3 Tablet Compact (who names these things) and SmartWatch 3 (SW3) – what was the shocker was the announcement that their new SW3 would be using Google’s Android Wear. I believe a smart move on Sony’s part – it will tie into the Android ecosystem and updates will be quicker…although there was no word on when or if the SW3 would come to Canada.
Sony said, “Lots of big news from us today – Sony sets a new standard with the Xperia Z3 series… and it’s coming to Canada. More information will be available later this year on Canadian Availability.”
Sony’s new Xperia Z3 flagship is sporting a 5-inch Full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) display and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz. It comes with 3GB of RAM and either with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, although via a microSD Card you can add an additional 128GB of storage to handle all of your picture, video or music needs. The main shooter is 20.7MP and the front-facing camera (FFC) is 2.2MP for video chatting and selfies. Power is provided by a non-removable 3,100mAh battery and is running Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. It measures 146 x 72 x 7.3mm and weighs in at 163 grams.
The Xperia Z3 Compact is truly a little powerhouse and what all ‘compact’ or ‘mini’ phones should be – a smaller version of their ‘big brother.’ The Z3 Compact reduces the display size down to 4.6-inches, but all of the other specs of the Z3 remain the same! The Xperia E3 retains the traditional look and feel of the Z3, but is a more budget-oriented device with a 4.8-inch 720p display, less memory, and slower processor. The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is an 8-inch Full HD display, a Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage with a microSD card slot. It has a 8.1MP main camera and a 2.2MP FFC and a 4,500mAh battery.
