The Wait Goes On For The New Android Statue And The Mystery Of L Continues

Android has stirred up a lot of debate since its annual I/O event with the launch of Android Wear (the operating system for wearable technology), Android Auto (its new operating system for cars), Android One (a basic version of its operating system designed for low-end devices). However, what has probably stirred up the most attention (and controversy) since I/O was Android L, the next generation operating system which is due to hit the market in the next few months. More specifically the controversy and attention has surrounded the new operating system’s future name. With Google only referring to Android L as ‘L’ this has caused widespread debate over its name in the same way there was before Android 4.4 (KitKat) was released. The most popular names doing the rounds at the moment are Lollipop (possible Lollypop), Lemon Head, Licorice and Lemon Meringue Pie.

Over the last few days in particular there was quite a lot of buzz building around the now famous Mountain View office belonging to Google. A couple of days ago we reported an anonymous individual had snapped a couple of images which suggested construction work was about o take place on the lawn. What was particularly interesting was a sign on the doors advising staff there would be a crane present on Saturday which sent the rumor mill into overdrive with everyone (including us) assuming they were about to install the latest statue… and as a result letting loose the big secret behind ‘L’.

It now seems this was much ado about very little. Instead of Google’s workmen installing the anticipated L statue it seems they were merely moving the current (Cupcake to KitKat) statues around. Whether this is to make room for the newest Android incarnation or simply a very clever and not-so-funny stunt by Google (the former is probably far more likely) it seems we will have to wait a few more days (at the very least) before getting our first glimpse at the future Android. That is of course unless any eagle eye readers happen to snap any more interesting goings-on around Mountain View. So what do you guys want L to be called? Personally, I like Lollypop. Are you a Lollypop (or Lollipop) fan? A Lemon Head? Or fancy a slice of Lemon Meringue Pie? Let us know by leaving a comment.
