It’s no secret that Samsung has become such a popular name in the Android arena because of their fairly quick and dependable software updates. While they might not be as quick as the new Motorola that’s on the ball when it comes to updates, but Samsung pretty much always updates their previous flagships, going back a fair long way when it comes to keeping their devices supported. Sadly, this wasn’t the case with the quad-core European Galaxy S III as Samsung didn’t feel it could run Android 4.4 KitKat as well as TouchWiz. Of course, developers soon proved otherwise, but nevertheless Samsung’s update record is fairly decent, especially when compared to the likes of Sony and LG.
Now, a leaked roadmap has appeared which seems to show us just which Samsung smartphones are getting the update to Android 4.4.4 KitKat and when. Key devices listed with their updates in “final testing” are the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3 Neo, a cut-down version of the Galaxy Note 3 for emerging markets. Then, there are a lot of devices listed as “pending” which pretty much means Samsung has either not gotten started with them or that they’re waiting to come up with a final decision. Here, devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy Note 2 are listed. While we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Galaxy S4 Mini updated, the Galaxy Note 2 launched way back towards the end of 2012 and it also features the same processor as the Galaxy S3 that wasn’t updated, albeit with 2GB of RAM and a faster clock speed. Hopefully, Samsung do decide to update the Galaxy Note 2 to Android 4.4.4 as it’s extremely unlikely the device is to get Android L so a final update that has all the bugs fixed and so on would be nice to see.
Meanwhile, there are other devices on this list like the Galaxy Grand 2, a decidedly budget device that we wouldn’t necessarily expect to get updated. Of course, this leaked roadmap could be falsified in some way and unfortunately, the only way to see if these updates come true is to patiently wait for them.
