This year more than any other year it seems the variety of high quality devices is much wider. With this in mind it is difficult to say what really is the best device of 2014. Before you say anything yes, I know the Nexus 6 is out and yes, I know you love it. The point it that it seems each major flagship has its own benefits, down points and fan base. For instance, the Nexus 6 is a great device but the price is inevitably putting buyers off. As such the title for the device of the year seems quite widely up for grabs. A good contender for the title will certainly be the 2014 edition of the Motorola Moto X. It could almost be guaranteed that if you ask any of the owners they will tell you this is the winner and how great it is. Although the point could be argued the Moto X 2nd generation is a great phone.
In terms of specs the Moto X comes with a 5.2″ AMOLED screen (1920 x 1080 resolution, 423ppi). Inside the device is loaded with 2GB RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor (with an Adreno 330 GPU). Camera-wise the Moto X offers a 13MP rear camera along with a 2MP front shooter. The device is available in 16 and 32GB variants, comes running on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) and powered via a 2,300mAh battery. Downsides though are the Moto X does not come with a microSD card slot and also the battery is non-removable.
Sound good? Well, if you do like it and haven’t picked one up yet than pay attention. Motorola is currently offering a rather good deal on Verizon. You can currently pick up the device on a two year contract for as little as $49.99. Now to be clear Amazon does offer a similar deal at the same price. However with Motorola’s deal you have the ability to customize the device as you want it with Moto Maker. For those who have never used Moto Maker, this is an online tool which allows you to choose most aesthetic aspects of the device. The options include the colour (and material) of the back, front, trim and even get the device engraved (unlike Amazon). Now nearly all of the customization options are free with the only notable exceptions being the natural and leather backs which come attached with an extra $25. Either way though if you are thinking about a Moto X and want to customize it (of course you do) then this is the best deal about at the moment, but take note the deal is only available over the weekend (until October 20th).
