When the Samsung Galaxy Alpha was released, everybody could not wait to get their hands on this new metal smartphone from Samsung. The Galaxy Alpha, found its way to Canada as an exclusive on Bell and Virgin Mobile in Canada with Bell carrying the Dazzling White, Charcoal Black or Frosted Gold versions and Virgin Mobile carried only the Dazzling White or Charcoal Black colors. The Galaxy Alpha is now going to be available on Quebec’s regional carrier, Videotron – “coming soon” to “make a smartphone statement.” Other than letting us know that they will carry the device, there was no price indication, but if we assume (we do a lot of that) they will follow Bell’s lead – we can expect a $149.95 on a two-year term or $699.95 out right and it looks like just the Dazzling White and Charcoal Black will be offered.
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a sheep in wolves’ clothing – It looks like a million bucks and costs close to $700, but inside, it is only a midrange device. The Alpha looks like it belongs in the executive boardroom or at a fundraiser party in a penthouse – the sculptured metal edges add that look of sophistication and elegance. However, a techie would never be caught dead with it – it just does not have the specifications to hold our interest.
It has a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display, but it is only of the HD variety – meaning a meager resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It does sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It has a 12MP main camera with auto-focus and LED flash and a 2.1MP front-facing camera (FFC) for video chatting and selfies. A meager 1860mAh battery powers the device running Android 4.4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box. It measure 132.4 x 65.5 x 6.7mm and weighs in at 115 grams. The Galaxy Alpha does have a fingerprint scanner and a Private Mode that creates a private folder for your sensitive documents that only you can access via your fingerprint scan. Samsung also brought over the heart rate monitor and their Ultra Power Saving Mode (UPSM) to drastically increase your battery life.
