HTC usually makes their new device announcement at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Barcelona each March. That is where they unveiled the new HTC One M8 with a 5-inch Full HD (FHD) display with 1920 x 1080 pixels of resolution and 441 Pixels-Per-Inch (PPI), the Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core 801 clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and room to expand that by 128GB via a microSD Card. The Snapdragon 801 HTC used was really a jazzed up 800 and was not quite the 801 model found in the later Samsung Galaxy S5 or the LG G3.
Now under the IBTimes Technology section today, they are claiming that the rumored HTC One M9, set to debut at MWC this Spring, may arrive next month…something I find very hard to believe, although an intermediary upgrade could make sense to bump it up to current specs, before a new 64-bit model arrives next year. That is one of HTC’s biggest let downs – they want to be first, before Samsung and LG, but by doing so usually are already ‘left back’ from the others in technology that was not available at the time of the HTC One’s release.
The new HTC One M9 is rumored to have a 5.2-inch Quad HD (QHD) display – although another rumor has it pegged at 5.5-inches – with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and a jump to 564 PPI…this is a sound move as the displays will stay at QHD for the next year or two. It is said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core 805 clocked at 2.7GHz with 3GB or RAM inside…this could be a mistake on HTC’s part as the 64-bit Snapdragons will be out in early 2015, possibly making it ‘obsolete’ before its time. Will HTC wait until 2016 to debut its first 64-bit model when Android 5.0 Lollipop is 64-bits and eager to go now? The new HTC One M9 is also rumored to be a 64GB base, with a 128GBs of storage available. It should also have a larger battery and more UltraPixels in the main camera.
Remember this is all a rumor (and yes, we know that the picture is a concept, NOT the real McCoy) and one that I really hope is not true – I would love to see an updated HTC One M8 with these specs as a holdover until the 64-bit Snapdragon processors go commercial in 2015…otherwise HTC will come out early in the year with their one flagship model and then be outclassed by everybody else that comes out 2 months later.
