Are you ready for Samsung’s most expensive smartwatch to date? Today, Samsung announced that their new Samsung Gear S smartwatch would be available in the Samsung stores starting tomorrow, November 14. The carriers and other retailers will soon follow with their own announcements of availability, although nothing definite has been mentioned. The new Gear S has a MSRP of $399.99 CAD – okay $400 – but this curved, Tizen driven smartwatch is certainly their most advanced – carrying its own SIM card and able to make and receive phone calls without the need of your smartphone anywhere in its vicinity.
The new Tizen driven Samsung Gear S is quite a change from the other smartwatches offered by Samsung up until now. It sports an elongated curved display – designed to give you the most display area in the most comfortable way possible, as the curve fits nicely ‘around’ your wrist. The Gear S has full 2-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 490 pixels and features a “customizable screen option” so the user can give their Gear S their own personalized look.
The Gear S performs all of the usual smartwatch functions, such as, notifications, alerts, complete texting and emails, alarms and more…but its real claim to fame is that the Gear S also includes 3G connectivity with its own SIM card. This not only brings data capabilities to your wrist allowing you to surf the web or make and receive phone calls without the need of pairing to a smartphone. This is one smartwatch that you can truly take with you and leave your smartphone at home or the office when you run out for lunch or run into the store to pick up that loaf of bread on the way home. The Gear S also has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built in as well.
Our source has sent a request to the Canadian carriers to find out whether they will be carrying the Gear S and how they will bill for it – will it come with a ‘wearable’ plan like the one the U.S. carriers are using.
