Motorola already pushed the Android Lolipop soak test update to its Pure addition of smartphones earlier this month, but yesterday the Verizon owners of Motorola X (2nd generation) who are members of Motorola Feedback Network had been invited to test out an early preview of the new software release. Android Lolipop is not mentioned in the invite, but Verizon pushes out updates for their Motorola X smartphones pretty fast so this just might be the Android 5.0 update we have been waiting for. It gets a big redesign with the totally new stock keyboard, increased animations and Ambient Display. Keep in mind that Verizon users of Motorola X still don’t have the access to VoLTE function, so this update might just bring both features into reality.
Verizon Wireless also calls VoLTE (voice over LTE) Advance Calling 1.0. It features an HD voice transfer which makes phone quality way better what we have now and it also brings video calls which use your minutes + 6-8 MB of data unless you are on a Wi-Fi access point. VoLTE has up to three times more voice and data capacity than 3G UMTS and up to six times more than 2G GSM. VoLTE is for now only available if the 2 interlocutors are on the same network and have devices which support VoLTE. So far only AT&T and Verizon Wireless are using this technology and the users are allegedly going to get the cross carrier VoLTE between AT&T and Verizon Wireless in 2015. With the adoption of VoLTE the standard circuit – switched network as we know it today will become history.
It is going to be interesting to see, once the update starts rolling out what Verizon and Motorola are really up to. Are they going to introduce two major updates at once? I believe this would be a great move for both the Verizon and Motorola and will also make a lot of users of the Moto X (2nd generation) really happy to get both, the newest software along with the latest voice transition technology in one update. As mentioned before, the software update will be available to the Motorola Feedback Members first, in order to be tested for all the bugs before it is released to the general public.
