If you are an AT&T customer who was grandfathered into an unlimited data plan then you have probably realized that there is one big drawback to this. That drawback is that your data gets throttled after you use a certain amount, not only throttled but throttled to almost unusable speeds. AT&T then promised to stop doing just that and they did, kind of. You see, they stopped throttling some unlimited users, but not all. Of course, AT&T had a clever excuse as to why this was, they claimed that they needed to slow down some users data in order to maintain their network congestion. This turned out to be flat out false.
Jon Brodkin from Ars Technica did a little digging and found out something pretty interesting pertaining to AT&Ts excuse for still throttling some unlimited users data. He found that AT&T was throttling these users at any point during the day, not just during network peak times. This essentially tells us that AT&T was indeed not throttling its unlimited users to deal with network congestion. While these customers aren’t actually throttled until after they use more than 5GB of data, they are throttled for the entire remainder of the month at all times.
Despite all of this, AT&T has now said that they will be changing their policy and will stop throttling all of their grandfathered-in unlimited data customers. After this policy change takes place, all of AT&Ts customers who have been grandfathered into unlimited data plans will actually have unlimited data and will no longer be throttled after using more than 5GB of data. Like we mentioned above, AT&T is already doing this for some of their unlimited users but there is still a majority of them, which appear to be the oldest customers, that are being throttled at the moment. If you are an AT&T customer who was lucky enough to have been grandfathered into an unlimited data plan, drop us a comment and let us know if your data is being throttled every month after you pass the 5GB mark. Also, let us know how long you have been an AT&T customer, we would love to know.
