Google’s Glass project has come a long way these past two years with software upgrades and new uses found by companies that see fit for the device. After being on earth for so long, Google Glass will soon go beyond the earth’s atmosphere as soon as next week. In partnership with Kentucky Space LLC, the Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology at Tufts University, announced an upcoming mission involving Google Glass to aid in an exomedicine experiment on December 16, 2014 to the International Space Station. According to Interapt, “Exomedicine involves the research, development and commercialization of biomedical solutions in the microgravity environment of space for applications on Earth.” The research will take us a step further in getting people in space by having medical solutions in zero gravity.
The mission which of course will be conducted in space will be set for launch at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. According to Kentucky Space, the team will “Analyze the regeneration mechanisms of planarian flatworms in the microgravity environment of space.” What role will Google Glass play in this mission? The team will use Glass as an augmented reality tool in pre- and post-flight operations. So as of right now Google Glass won’t be part of the actual mission, but by implementing Glass in this small way, the path will be paved for the utilization of Google Glass as a human interface with Kentucky Space experiments on the International Space Station in 2015. Kentucky space isn’t alone in this endeavor, helping them will be Interapt which is a Google Glass Work Certified Partner based in Louisville, KY.
Although Google Glass hasn’t had the best of times these past two years as being a wanted item like smartwatches, Glass has been highly looked at by companies that want to implement the device for use in their operations. Kentucky Space is just one of many that have found use for Glass and they won’t be the last. With the next generation of Glass on the way, the device can open a door to new techniques and uses for many people and businesses.
