At the heart of the recent OTA update storm concerning the OnePlus One and Cyanogen is Micromax, a company that Cyanogen has formed a partnership for a new line of smartphones. With the upcoming launch of the Yu brand just a few days away, with it scheduled for December 18th, it’s no surprise that details of the first device have leaked out. What is surprising however, is that Micromax could be starting off their new line of smartphones with a rebranded Coolpad device.
Gadgetraid is reporting that the Micromax Yu will be launching as a rebranded variant of the Coolpad F2. They’ve managed to get their hands on a number of photos from the upcoming Yu launch, and they’ve compared them to photos of the Coolpad F2. In the photos you’ll see below, there are some striking similarities between the two devices. Including the design and positioning of the camera and LED flash, the power button and the speaker grill. Of course, there are only so many ways that you can design a smartphone, and this could be just a coincidence, but the photos do line up quite nicely together. Even so, we’d advise taking this with a grain of salt, as always.
If the Micromax Yu does launch as a rebranded Coolpad F2, then we could know the internal specs of the device already. The Coolpad F2 comes in a number of variants, with a Snapdragon 615 variant listed online in China and a more common MediaTek MT6592 octa-core CPU variant. With 2GB of RAM and a 5.5-inch 720p display listed on the spec sheet as well, it’d seem like Micromax’s CyanogenMod phone is to be more conservative than we first thought. Still, an affordable device running up-to-date software would be a welcome site for the Indian market, even if it is a rebranded Coolpad device. Take a look at the images below, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
