Android 5.0 (Lollipop) is back in the news again. It seems barely a day passes without some news about Android’s new operating system making an appearance. This time it is Sony related. So if you own a Sony device then you might want to pay attention. A week before Christmas it was reported that the Sony Xperia Z2 and the Sony Xperia Z3 series of devices will both receive Lollipop in early 2015. This was based on an announcement made by the Sony team via their Twitter account. This announcement simply confirmed that both the Z2 and Z3 lines were added to the already increasing Sony line expected to receive Lollipop.
Well, 2015 is only a few days away now, although ‘early 2015’ could be a couple of months away. If you simply cannot wait that long then you do not have to. At least not for an official version of Lollipop. The Free Xperia Development (FXP) team have announced a Christmas present for a number of Sony device owners. If you have not yet come into contact with the FXP, then these are a group of developers who focus on offering support to a number of current and obsolete Sony devices. In their recent announcement (which was actually on Christmas day), the team announced that they have now begun nightly support for an AOSP unofficial version of Lollipop. As such a number of Sony Devices can now experience Android 5.0.2 on their devices. If you are wondering whether your device is supported then here we go. According to the blog post, the devices offered ported support include the Sony Xperia E3, Xperia M2, Xperia T2 Ultra and the Xperia T3. If you are a Sony Xperia Z range owner then the supported Z devices include Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact. The supported Sony Xperia Z2 devices include Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z2 Tablet. Lastly, the supported Sony Xperia Z3 supported devices include the Sony Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
It is worth noting that if you currently own a Wi-Fi variant of the Xperia Z2 Tablet and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact then the ports are not available, as of yet for your device. That said the FXP team have announced they will be available soon. For all supported devices, you will be able to find the various nightly downloads directly on the download page under your device model number.
