Xiaomi Redmi 1S was a great mid-range handset, the company has sold tons of Redmi 1S units in 2014, and I’d bet that was the most selling device of that company last year. This China-based company has introduced its successor earlier this month, on January 4 to be more precise, the Redmi 2. This is a slightly upgraded version of the Redmi 1S, in all the right places, and it costs less than Redmi 1S did at launch. Many people thought that’s it as far as that devices goes, but then a Redmi 2 with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage got certified by TENAA yesterday, which is double the RAM and storage compared to the original Redmi 2. That being said, the device has since been confirmed by Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun, who confirmed the existence of this thing via his official Weibo page. As far as I can tell, the price and the release date for this thing are still unknown, but you can expect this thing to be available rather soon.
This upgraded version of the Redmi 2 handset features a 4.7-inch 720p display, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable internal storage (up to 32GB). In other words, it will ship with double the RAM and internal storage compared to the original, as I already mentioned. This handset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 SoC, a 64-bit quad-core chip clocked at 1.2GHz and an Adreno 306 GPU which is here for graphics. 8-megapixel camera is located on the back of this smartphone and is flanked by an LED flash, while there’s a 2-megapixel snapper available up front. Android 4.4.4 KitKat comes pre-installed on this device with Xiaomi’s MIUI 6 OS on top of Google’s operating system. This thing will look exactly like the Redmi 2, the two devices are identical in every aspect except the RAM and internal storage count.
Did this move by Xiaomi surprise you? This is really weird in a way, a couple of weeks after the released the 1GB version, the company confirms that the 2GB version is on the way. People who purchased the original model might be slightly irritated, especially if the price point for this thing is close to the original’s price. Anyhow, is this something you might consider buying?
