Android 5.0.1 (Lollipop) has been some of the biggest news we have seen in the tech world for a long time. That is not too surprising, as this is the biggest change to the android operating system in a very long time. Since the operating system was announced, everyone has been after the update. No matter who the manufacturer, their respective customers have been turning to them, looking for when their update will land. That said, it seems the manufacturers were well aware this would be the case and when Lollipop was released, a number of the manufacturers announced they would be releasing Lollipop to their customers within “ninety days”. In fact, a number of manufacturers stated this ninety day rule even before Google released the code. That will tell you how confident they were.
As such, the great Lollipop update race begun. All the OEMs announced the ninety day marker and set sail trying to bring Lollipop to their devices before the other. Since then, we have seen a number of builds rolling out to random devices (and sometimes in random countries). However, as February approaches that ninety day ruling is coming to a close. So much so, that we today have official confirmation of the first casualty of their own making. HTC have just announced that they will not make their self-imposed ninety day marker for delivering Lollipop.
Yes, HTC have just released a statement (source link below) stating that they will not be delivering Android 5.0 to either the HTC One M8 or the HTC One M7 before the ninety day marker is due to expire. Which is February 1st by the way. Specifically, the announcement noted “some carrier versions” of both devices, so it is unclear if some will receive the update before Feb 1st. HTC were quick to point out that they have been (and still are) working extremely hard to get these Lollipop updates out as quickly as possible, but due to some unforeseen setbacks (they blame Google for some of them) they will miss their deadline.
