There are few things as exciting as receiving an OTA update – I’m not talking about going from Android 4.4.3 KitKat to 4.4.4 KitKat, we are referring to jumping from 4.4.4 KitKat to 5.0.1 Lollipop! However, what can be a most exciting time can also be a stressful time, as there is a lot going on, and the possibility of a miscue is always there. Sure, they are all tested by quality assurance (QA), but in the wild, anything can happen. It seems as though the Moto X 2014 users on WIND Mobile in Canada are finding that out, according to the posters on Reddit.
For most users, the OTA update is actually bricking their Moto X or causing it to go into a continuous boot loop and many are having trouble even turning them off. One frustrated user (NoxiousDogCloud) said after he received notice about the OTA: “I got home, downloaded, and ran the update. Now my phone is stuck boot looping. I’m currently trying to get the phone to wipe, but recovery mode is being a pain in the a$$. When I get to recovery mode, and select “recovery”, I get the android with the words “no command”. After that I can’t get the phone to do anything.” He followed up with: “Finally got the phone to turn off completely. I had to go to recovery mode, then select shut down. I still can’t get the phone to recognise the SIM card or give me WiFi. I’m stuck.”
NoxiousDogCloud’s final assessment: “While you’re stuck in a boot loop, the only way to shut down the phone is to enter recovery mode. To access the boot loader, hold power to turn the phone off. While it’s off hold Vol Down + Power for a few seconds, then release. What I ended up doing was holding the buttons for 3 seconds, then releasing, and then holding them again. I did this until the boot loader came up. Once you’re at the boot loader, go to Recovery, and when you have the Android ! symbol and “No Command”, hold power and tap Vol Up. This will get you into Recovery Mode. Select the power down option, and your phone will turn off and not come reboot itself.”
WIND has pushed his complaint to a Level 2 Support, along with many others, so your best bet would be to contact WIND before you do your OTA Lollipop update to get the latest facts. While there is nothing more exciting than getting that upgrade, there is nothing more frustrating than bricking your smartphone.
