Google has launched their Android One program back in September 2014 when the company partnered up with 3 India-based manufacturers, and announced three new devices. Micromax Canvas A1, Karbonn Sparkle V and Spice Dream Uno were the first three Android One smartphones, and all three of those are available in India as we speak. It was just a matter of time before these handsets get updated to the newest version of Google’s operating system, and that just happened.
The Mountain View giant has announced that Android Lollipop rollout to these three devices has already started. The update is being released on a weekly basis, so some of you might have to wait a bit before the update comes your way. “We’ve already started rolling out Lollipop to a small number of phones in India. This is a gradual process and so each week we’ll push the OTA update to more phones selected at random (pro-tip: connecting over WiFi will increase your odds),” said Caesar Sengupta in his post on Google+.
Android One’s official Google+ doesn’t mention which version of Android Lollipop we’re talking about here, neither does Caesar Sengupta, but it’s safe to assume that the Android 5.1 Lollipop is the version in question here. Why? Well, the Android One smartphones which got released in Philippines recently are running this version of the OS, and their hardware is more or less the same as the smartphones we’re talking about here.
Unfortunately, Google still hasn’t released the official Android 5.1 Lollipop changelog, but we can expect that soon enough. We’ve already seen some changes in this version of Android thanks to some reports, but the emphasis is on bug fixes and improvements throughout the operating system. Android Lollipop is a huge step forward for Google, but considering the amount of changes Google had to implement compared to KitKat, Android 5.0 Lollipop update wasn’t exactly the bug-free experience everyone was hoping it would be. Google has fixed / improved upon a lot of things within the OS itself according to latest reports, and we’ll see the changelog for the update really soon. Do you own an Android One device?
