Last year, during Google I/O, the company announced Android one, a platform to deliver up-to-date software in decent hardware to emerging markets throughout the East. It launched in India towards the end of 2014, and while the response hasn’t been quite as positive as we’d have thought, Android One sure lives up to its original ideals. The devices are cheap, they run stock Android and those launched last year have already been updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Currently, the latest version of Android is 5.0.2, the very version running on the Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and other Nexus devices. In promotional material for the Android One launch in Indonesia however, Google thinks that the latest version of Lollipop is Android 5.1.
As Android Police is reporting, both the Android One site for Indonesia (in English or Indonesian) mentions Android 5.1 a handful of times and the three devices that are launching soon are all listed as running Android 5.1. The three devices in question are the Evercross One X, the Nexian Journey and the Mito Impact. Each one of them shares the exact same specs, with 4.5-inch displays with 854 x 480 resolutions and a Cortex A7 quad-core CPU at 1.3 Ghz with 1GB of RAM to back it up. There’s 8GB of expandable storage here and 5-megapixel rear-facing and 2-megapixel front-facing cameras.
When mentioning Lollipop in the material, Android 5.1 is listed next to it, and while the devices do appear to be running Lollipop, there’s every chance that this is a typo. Or, Google is planning a large update release to Lollipop to squash the bugs and tweak the overall user experience, though this sort of update would normal be a smaller update and typically Google saves bigger updates this sort of version revision. Never mind all that though, it’s great to see Android One expanding into new territories at last, and just like it did in India, Google has managed to make some deals with Indonesian networks to download 200MB of apps from the Play Store a month for free and YouTube Offline comes along for the ride as well.
Android One is said to rollout in Indonesia later this month, according to a recent blog post, and so we should have our answer on whether or not Android 5.1 is coming along for the ride, but in the mean time we’ll keep an eye on the Android One site to see if anyone has fixed any typos, like the ones concerning version numbers.
