Over the years, Android update schedules have improved significantly from what it was back in the Android 2.x days. That however doesn’t give a whole lot of comfort to someone who bought a flagship from nearly every single OEM out there in the past year and are wondering where in the world their Android 5.0 Lollipop update is. OEMs have almost unanimously pledged to get the latest version of Android out to their latest flagship phones within 90 days of release of the source code by Google, however we already passed that day three days ago and there are still plenty of people without the update. This is due to a number of reasons outside of the original manufacturer’s control, including carrier testing and other types of certification depending on your country.
Canadians on Rogers will be a little more in the know today after a big update from Canada’s largest wireless provider showing some very specific release dates for popular phones that were sold last year. Last year Sony released the Xperia Z3 with Android 4.4 KitKat, and now it’s going to be getting the Android 5.0 Lollipop update just next month in March. Meanwhile Sony’s 2013 flagship, the Xperia Z1, will be getting its Android 5.0 Lollipop update in April after the Z3. The rest of the list is a little more sparse with specific dates, but Rogers has the term “Coming Soon!” listed right next to the HTC One M7, LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy S5. Rogers isn’t clear on what “Coming Soon!” means, however, given the state of the update it’s likely we’ll see them before May at the latest.
Some users that may not be quite as happy are owners of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, both of which have their Android 5.0 Lollipop updates listed as TBD. There’s no telling what this means exactly, but given that Samsung recently announced that it was having trouble with the Gear VR compatibility in its Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Galaxy Note 4 it’s likely this TBD is more due to a technical nature on Samsung’s part rather than something on Rogers end. Still owners of these devices should know that the update will be in their hands over the next couple of weeks or months, and of course if you don’t mind potentially voiding your warranty you could always go with a custom ROM solution out there.
