One market in which Samsung is fairly successful in Asia is the Indian market and while their devices aren’t exactly what you’d call good value in an emerging market like India, they have a big following nonetheless. This week, the company has a trio of new devices for the Indian consumer; all of them with 4G support. The Galaxy J1, Galaxy Core Prime and Galaxy Grand Prime are all decidedly low-end devices, but they’re designed to offer some of the best that Samsung has to offer without the mammoth price tag. All three of these devices share common DNA together, with the Galaxy Core and Galaxy Grand Prime being similar to older Galaxy designs, but the Galaxy J1 is something a little new for the company.
We’ll start with the Galaxy Core Prime and Galaxy Grand Prime, both of which look very similar and share common design and features. The Galaxy Core Prime is a 4.5-inch device with a 800 x 480 resolution, a 1.2 Ghz quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. There are 5-megapixel rear-facing and 2-megapixel front-facing cameras here and of course, Android 4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz onboard. The Galaxy Grand Prime is a little bit nicer, with a 5-inch qHD display at 960 x 540 and a 1.2 Ghz Snapdragon 410 quad-core CPU as well as the same 1GB of memory and 8GB of expandable storage. Where the Galaxy Grand Prime differs is with the 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and the larger, 2,600 mAh battery as opposed to the 2,000 mAh battery inside the Galaxy Core Prime.
Moving on to the Galaxy J1 and things are a little different, yet nothing too drastic of a change from Samsung. This new model appears to be cut from the same cloth as the Galaxy Alpha, albeit a much cheaper roll of that cloth. This is a 4.3-inch device with an 800 x 480 display resolution, a 1.2 Ghz quad-core CPU, 768MB of RAM and 4GB of expandable storage. If that weren’t bad enough the 5-megapixel and 2-megapixel rear and front cameras aren’t all that exciting, either. Having said that, the 1,850 mAh battery isn’t too bad for a device like this and Android 4.4 with Samsung’s touches are still here, too.
Samsung is perhaps going to face some trouble on the pricing front of these devices, as they all start at RS 9,990 which is hardly cheap for a device with the sort of specs as the Galaxy J1. Still, all of these do support 4G LTE, even if that’s yet to take off in the country. Hopefully though, when these go on sale in the first week of March, Samsung will have good offers in store for customers.
