Samsung Galaxy J1 has been announced by the company at the end of last month. The device was introduced in the Malaysian market and it was just a matter of time before it reaches other markets as well. As we’re waiting for Samsung to introduce their Galaxy S6 flagship on March 1st, the company is making their lower-end offerings available wherever they can. Amazon India has revealed that the Samsung Galaxy J1 smartphone will be available in the country starting February 11. Amazon also said that the handset will cost Rs. 7,190 ($116) and that they will offer some goodies alongside Samsung’s budget smartphone.
The Galaxy J1 features a 4.3-inch WVGA display along with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card). This thing is powered by the 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A7 processor and it comes with Android 4.4 KitKat pre-installed with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top of it. 1,850mAh battery ships with this device as well, 5-megapixel AF camera is located at the back of this handset, and the 2-megapixel snapper if available up front.
This handset really doesn’t cost all that much, but it’s still way too much considering what you get in the package. I’d have a really hard time recommending a 512MB handset to anyone these days, and the rest of this thing’s specifications doesn’t look all that promising either. I do think that Samsung went a bit too far this time around, I doubt they’ll be able to sell a ton of these handsets in India, but we’ll see. There are better options out there, even for that amount of money, but that’s just my opinion.
Samsung is trying to get their smartphone sales / profits back on track following the significant profit drop in 2014, I do think they’ll have to do better than this though. The company will announce their Galaxy S6 flagship as part of MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona on March 1st. Samsung will probably also announce the Galaxy S6 Edge over there as well, and those two handsets will most certainly boost Samsung’s sales and profits, at least for a while.
