On Monday, Apple held their ‘Spring Forward’ event in San Francisco, where they mostly were there to talk about the Apple Watch, as well as pricing and availability for it. But as Apple always does, they had to update us on a slew of other things. Including how well the iPhone and iPad are doing, the new Retina Macbook. And they also threw in a tid bit about their CarPlay. Which is their answer to Android Auto. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook stated that every car will have Apple CarPlay. That’s pretty insane, but also made us wonder, what about Android Auto? While iOS is huge here in the US, Android does have over 80% of the market share in the world right now. And so far we’ve only seen Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in a handful of cars.
While Apple says they will be in every car, Android Auto won’t. At least not right now. Google has partnered with a bunch of auto makers to form the Open Automotive Alliance. Which has a slew of auto makers included, and those will be including Android Auto in their future cars. Now they may not be happening right away, but they will be including Android Auto at some point.
It’s great for Apple to have CarPlay in ever car, I think it’d be better and definitely better for the consumer, if every auto maker included both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This way the owner of the car can choose. Seeing as many people flip from iOS to Android, you shouldn’t have to get a new car when you switch smartphone OS, or have to stop using the included infotainment system. This way consumers can choose. A tip of the hat to Apple for getting CarPlay into everything, now it’s Google’s turn to do the same. It’s obvious that cars is the next big thing, as we’ve seen NVIDIA and others getting into the car scene already.
Would you buy a car that has both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto? Or just one or the other? Which would you prefer? Let us know in the comments down below.
