MWC has been in full swing over the last few days and there have been a number of big announcements. Today though, known security and internet virus protection company, Avast were making a few announcements of their own. One of those in particular was the launch of a new service from Avast which is being dubbed ‘SecureMe’. For those, who are worried about connecting to WiFi networks securely and especially those in public places, then this might be the announcement for you. There has been much press recently surrounding the notion of WiFi hacking, where criminals use unsecured connections to reroute web traffic to fake internet sites. Once the user enters their credentials, the criminals then know. As such, this is a useful feature for those that often connect to WiFi networks in airports, cafes, hotels and the likes.
To combat this, the new feature is based off of the same underlying technology used by Avast to protect the 175 million PC’s they already protect. In terms of the feature, SecureMe is designed to automatically and effectively determine if a WiFi network that you are trying to connect to is a safe one. If the network is not safe, then the feature will automatically tell you that you are trying to connect to an unsafe network. If you still need and want to connect to the same network, then SecureMe will create a secure connection for you to ensure you and your data remains safe while connected.
According to Avast’s President of Mobile, Jude McColgan “Avast SecureMe and Avast Mobile Security offer users a simple, one-touch solution to find and choose safe networks to protect themselves from the threat of stolen personal data.” If you have already downloaded the Avast android app then there is nothing else for you to do and the new SecureMe feature will be available in the next update (if you have not received it already). For those yet to download the app, it is available now from the Play Store. For more information on the new feature, click the source link to read the full press release.
