Sony might not have staged the same sort of press events that Samsung and HTC have done during Mobile World Congress this year, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have anything to shout about. The company announced the new Xperia Z4 Tablet to much fanfare and their 2014 product lineup is still a strong one by today’s standards. The Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 line of devices were some of the best from 2014 and they’re set to get better with the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop that Sony promises is coming very soon. We managed to spend some quality time with Sony’s Lollipop on the Xperia Z4 Tablet and their Xperia Z3 smartphone.
As with previous versions of Android, Sony’s touch on Android 5.0 is a light one, and it looks like Sony has embraced Google’s vision for Lollipop more than say, Samsung or HTC have done. Spending just a little time with either of these devices and you can clearly see that this is still Android 5.0 Lollipop. Much of Google’s operating system has been left alone, but there’s also a lot of Sony’s DNA here. As an Xperia Z2 owner myself, I can see that Sony have kept much of what made KitKat on Sony’s devices that little bit different, and many Sony apps still look and feel the same as they did on KitKat.
It’s refreshing to see a big name Android manufacturer like Sony keep Google’s vision of Android alive and well; after all Motorola devices are perhaps too barebones for some users and Samsung and HTC arguably go too far the other way. Seating right in the middle is Sony, offering a clean, lean take on Google’s software that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel just for the sake of it. Take a look at the photos below and please, don’t ask us when the update is coming, because we simply don’t know!
