Google’s Nexus Player was manufactured by Asus and saw the company’s first real offering of Android TV. In fact, it was the first real offering of Android TV for the masses from any company and in any capacity. The device was unveiled back at I/O last year and saw its release into the U.S. market in November. Since then, it has taken its time in reaching other markets, although for the UK market, it finally looks like the time has arrived.
It was reported a few days back that Amazon UK had begun advertising the Nexus Player with a scheduled arrival date set for March 26th. Well, that is today’s date and right on time, Google have now flipped the switch and made the availability of the Nexus Player to UK customers, live. As such, if you live in the UK, you can now pick up the Nexus Player from the UK branch of the Google Store. Likewise, the Nexus Player can also now be purchased through Amazon UK. In terms of pricing, the Nexus player is available for £79.99, which does make it slightly more expensive (based on a straight conversion) compared to its U.S. listed price of $99.99. However, if you do want to take advantage of a standalone Android TV player then the cost will not be that much of an issue.
Like in the U.S., Google has also made the gamepad available for those who want to take advantage of a much more game orientated Android TV experience. The Asus Gamepad is available for £34.99. The system does come running on Android 5.0 (Lollipop), although the Nexus Player did only a matter of days ago, see an update arriving bringing the system up to Android 5.1. As such, the UK players are likely to see that update also landing, once the device is up and running.
