HTC has just announced their new flagship for 2015, the One M9, as part of MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona. This handset is in many ways really similar to its predecessor, the One (M8), so it seems right to compare these two, don’t you think? Well, let’s see what’s what here, and if the HTC One M9 is a worthy upgrade to the already popular and solid One (M8).
HTC One (M8)
HTC has launched the One (M8) about a year ago, and at the time, it was one of the best (Android) devices available according to many people. This handset features the metal unibody build, and looks really sleek and modern on the outside. The One (M8) sports a 5-inch 108op (1920 x 1080, 441ppi) Super LCD3 display, 2GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of in-built storage. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 quad-core SoC is powering this device along with an Adreno 330 GPU. Dual 4-megapixel UltraPixel cameras are located on the back of the device, and flanked by a dual LED flash, and a 5-megapixel camera is available up front for your selfie and video call needs. Android 4.4.2 KitKat originally came pre-installed with this device with HTC’s Sense 6 UI, though it received a couple of updates afterwards. This handset supports 4G LTE connectivity, of course, and it measures 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4mm.
HTC One M9
The all new HTC flagship, the One M9, features a 5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card up to 128GB). HTC’s newest piece of mobile technology is powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor which ships with an Adreno 430 GPU for graphics. A 20-megapixel camera is located on the back of HTC’s newest offering (latest BSI sensor) and is also flanked by a dual LED flash. On the front of the device you’ll find a 4-megapixel UltraPixel camera, which was located on the back of HTC One (M8). This device supports Cat.9 4G LTE connectivity speeds, and ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop with Sense 7 UI on top of it.
Conclusion
It was safe to assume that HTC would improve upon their latest flagship, and the HTC One M9 is a serious upgrade, no matter which way we’re looking at it. Although the two devices look fairly similar on the outside, the HTC One M9 sports a far more powerful processor, more RAM, improved BoomSound speakers, a new OS version and it has a 20-megapixel snapper on the back, which gives you far more pixels to work with compared to the 4-megapixel UltraPixel camera its predecessor features. Megapixels don’t mean much on their own, but taking HTCs word for it, this camera is really great, we’ll have to wait and see about that though.
I know that some of you perhaps don’t like the fact that the One M9 looks that similar to the One (M8), but that was to be expected I guess. HTC’s new flagship is a worthy upgrade, but the One (M8) is still a great device and will be for the foreseeable future.
