Samsung has started including metal in the design of their smartphones last year, when the company introduced the Galaxy Alpha handset. This device sported a metallic trim in combination with polycarbonate (plastic), which actually made a good combination. Several other similarly-designed devices followed the Alpha, and then Samsung released the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge earlier this month, two new flagships which sport a unibody metal design. Many people assumed that this means Samsung will release more such devices in the future, and the company just confirmed it.
Samsung’s Co-Chief Executive Officer, Shin Jong Kyun, said that the company plans to release more such metal smartphones with slim design and high-definition displays. Mr. Kyun shared this info today at Samsung’s annual shareholder meeting in Seoul. “Samsung Electronics aims to consolidate its leadership in the premium market and plans to newly change the smartphone line-up to strengthen competitiveness,” said J.K. Shin, Head of Samsung Mobile. As a side note, Samsung shares rose 1.9% to 1,475,000 won today, and the stock surged 8.7% since the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge were revealed earlier this month.
It seems like Samsung did the right thing when it comes to the company’s new flagships as a whole. Both of these devices were well received by the media and consumers alike, and according to the latest reports, Samsung received a huge amount of pre-orders for both of those devices. Certain reports even claimed that the company will have to produce more devices than they anticipated, as far as initial sales go. CitiBank’s latest report claims that the company might ship 46 million Galaxy S6 units by the end of this year. We’ll see what happens, but judging by the Shin Jong Kyun’s statement, Samsung will concentrate on manufacturing more premium devices in the future. It remains to be seen what’s next for the company, but I guess it’s safe to assume that the Galaxy Note 5 will also sport a metal unibody design, we’ll see.
