Samsung hasn’t officially launched the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge, that isn’t slated to happen until April 10th when both phones will be hitting store shelves at many major carriers and some major retailers like Best Buy, Amazon, and others. Pre-orders for both devices started on Friday however, with some carriers, like T-Mobile for example, stating that units would show up for people prior to when the handsets are scheduled to physically hit stores. Sometime between Friday and now some T-Mobile customers have reported that they already received their devices, which is an insanely fast turn around for the shipment given it’s only been a couple of days and it’s the weekend.
What’s just as interesting though is the fact that those consumers who have allegedly already received their phones are also already starting to see over-the-air software updates to those devices. The software being pushed out isn’t Android 5.1 Lollipop, but 5.0.2, so if you ordered a Samsung Galaxy S6 or Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and were hoping for this scenario, don’t get your hopes up about the latest version of Lollipop making it to your device this early. The software package that is being pushed out weighs in at about 178.76MB and brings in no new features to speak of, rather just some improvements to already existing functions that will be available out of the box.
Those improvements include enhancements to the fingerprint scanner functionality, a fix that was affecting the reboot process with an error message that stated “failed to reboot,” a clock drift fix, improvements to the audio quality on the device, a fix for calendar events, and a fix to improve the functionality of Exchange Global Address Lookup. Samsung pushing out these software updates so soon is likely because they wanted to make sure these fixes and improvements were available to users immediately prior to the launch of the devices inside retail stores, ensuring that users get these fixes as soon as they get their devices and before they start to really experience any of the minor issues the update is addressing. With that being said, software updates are never a blanketed affair reaching everyone at once, so some people may not get the update for anywhere between the next few days and week or two.
