Galaxy Blast is an arcade style Android game that tasks you with piloting a pair of ships through space, to avoid as many obstacles as possible and to collect as many coins as possible as you go. This sounds nice and easy, but there’s a big twist with Galaxy Blast; you need to keep two thumbs on the screen at all times. You need to keep these two thumbs on the screen and then adjust the size of the lasers and their position in order to avoid obstacles and collect coins. The aim of the game is to avoid causing damage to your lasers and you will complete each level if you survive for a certain amount of time. Of course, things get more and more challenging over time, and completing all the levels can be tough. Let’s take a closer look at Galaxy Blast.
To get started with the game, you’ll of course need to download Galaxy Blast from the Play Store. Once done, you can go ahead and open it up, seeing the main menu when you do so.
When you first start playing, you’ll be introduced to how you actually play Galaxy Blast, which is actually quite a bit different to other games.
One thing I liked about the “tutorial” part of Galaxy Blast is that it’s worked into level, making it feel less and less like a boring introduction.
When you actually play the game, you’ll discover that there are a lot of coins to collect through each level, and you quickly get used to the mechanic of moving and resizing the laser on the fly.
However, over time, you’ll have to dodge planets and it can get quite tricky.
There are a couple of tactics you can take, I try to be as small as possible, and always try to grab a powerup when I see one.
These powerups enable you to do a number of things, I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but some of them will fire attacks to help ward off obstacles and so on.
At the end of each level, you’ll be awarded a score made up of how many coins you’ve collected and a star rating, which actually relates to thinks you did when completing the level which is nice.
There are coins and such you can buy in the store, as well as nice little option to remove ads if you want.
Galaxy Blast is damn good fun, not because it’s a fairly simple arcade game that asks you to dodge stuff, but because of the mechanic using two thumbs. Not for a long time have I come across a game like this that actually asks me to do something different with my finger and thumbs. It’s also an excellent display of how sophisticated multi-touch is these days. The idea of being able to catch a lot of coins, shrink to whatever size you want and move wherever you want is cool, and it creates some seriously challenging levels where you have lots of small objects and massive planets and asteroids rolling by. Overall, it’s a game that will appeal to everyone, but I feel that kids and more casual gamers will find this a fun change of pace from other titles available on Android.
Ratings
- Speed (4/5) – Galaxy Blast runs just fine and I had no issues with the pacing of the game, either.
- Features (4.5/5) – The gameplay itself might feel familiar to a lot of other arcade games on Android, but needing to use two thumbs is pretty tricky and can be an exciting twist to how we normally control our games on smartphones and tablets.
- Theme (4/5) – There are some good 3D graphics on offer here with Galaxy Blast, but it could do with some extra color as the rolling black of space can grow tiresome after long sessions.
- Overall (4/5) – Galaxy Blast is a solid, fun and good-looking arcade game that challenges the very way we play games and if you’ve been looking for something genuinely different, then this won’t disappoint.
Pros
- There’s something fun about having to learn how to play a game again, and too many titles just use the same control scheme, here with Galaxy Blast that’s not the case.
- Ability to remove ads with a single purchase is definitely appreciated.
- Levels quickly become more and more challenging as time goes on, giving players something meaty to get invovled with.
- Good fun or all ages, regardless of their skill.
Cons
- The top-to-bottom scrolling aspect is not something that’s necessarily new.
- For larger people, like myself, using two thumbs like that can become uncomfortable.
All-in-all, Galaxy Blast is a game that will appeal to younger and more casual players more than anything else, but it’s good fun regardless. The idea of using two thumbs all the time is a nice challenge and it can be tricky to get used to. The levels become more of a challenge quite quickly, and everything looks good, too. If you’re looking for something that doesn’t try too hard, yet offers something fresh and a break from the norm, then Galaxy Blast is well worth trying out.
