Meizu has been relatively quiet lately, we haven’t seen many rumors / leaks regarding the company’s upcoming products nor any official news for that matter. Well, two days ago, an interesting leak popped up in China. Meizu-branded retail box surfaced with a headphone-like cutout inside, which suggested that the company is working on a headphone set. It didn’t take along for Meizu to respond to those leaks, the company’s Vice President had something to say on this official Weibo page, read on.
The company’s Vice President, Li Nan, has confirmed that Meizu is working on a headphone set. He also added that the company is working with professional headphone manufacturers, which is an indirect confirmation that AKG is developing these headphones along with Meizu. In case you don’t know, AKG is an Austrian company which manufactures microphones, headphones, wireless audio systems etc. The point is, this is a professional audio company which will certainly bring a lot to the table for Meizu. That being said, Meizu also has a quite significant past in the audio business, this company actually started off as an MP3 player manufacturer, which is also interesting.
Unfortunately, Li Nan didn’t give out any specific details regarding the partnership or anything regarding the headphones really. We don’t know when to expect this accessory to launch or how much will it cost, but knowing Meizu, they’ll be as cheap as it gets. This news actually also hints that Meizu is ready to branch out. This China-based company has been focused on manufacturing smartphones thus far, but it seems like they’re ready to compete with Xiaomi and Oppo in other areas as well. Meizu did announce a line of smart gadgets earlier this year (as part of some partnerships with other companies), but it seems there’s more to come. We’ve seen plenty of rumors regarding Meizu-branded Android-powered smartwatch, and now the company’s VP has confirmed they’re working on a headphone set. It remains to be seen what will Meizu announce next, but it seems like the company might surprise us. It would certainly be interesting to see a Meizu-branded tablet, smartwatch or a headphone set.
