Samsung is one of many manufacturers that have tried their hand at smart fitness tracker devices like LG and Sony. These kind of fitness oriented gadgets are each day gaining more attention, not only because they are getting more precise and technologically advanced, but because a greater number of people are taking a leap into the fitness culture. The main goal of smart fitness tracker devices is to help people with the need to monitor their health or fitness advances, reach their objectives. With an increased demand for fitness trackers, companies like Samsung are looking to further innovate in that area, even if this category of the mobile tech world is not as big as others, it is big enough for new products to be constantly released. Today, a new smart fitness tracker has made its first appearance, as a Samsung patent filed in March 2014 with the US Patent and Trademark Office, just got published, hinting that the South Korean based company is aiming to give the Nike FuelBand and JawBone UP fitness trackers some competition.
The new patent filed by Samsung has a simple title, “Mobile communication device”, which by itself doesn’t give a lot of information about the gadget, but the patent’s image shows that Samsung wants to create a new fitness tracker that is less protruding than other similar gadgets. The upcoming smart fitness tracker by Samsung can also be used as a loop string, possibly so that the user can utilize it as a necklace. Other uses of the minimalistic fitness tracker may include wearing it as a keychain enfolded to the user’s backpack or clothing. The patent shows a little clasp in one end, which might be a heart rate monitor, in which case thinking of it as a necklace might be the right thing to do.
Samsung knows that the ever growing fitness tracker market is one where the company should be extending its reach, after all, Samsung has already shown that it is interested in wearables and can successfully gain power over it. Other companies in the fitness tracker market should be worried about this new patent as it shows the potential to be a fierce competitor to other more well established and known gadgets, like the Nike FuelBand and JawBone UP.
