Samsung’s marketing is in high gear as commercial after commercial hits the airwaves for their new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Up until now, we have seen many 60-second videos on Samsung’s newest flagships, but now they are hitting us up with a quick 30-second spot showing off the devices’ wireless charging capabilities that include both Qi and PMA standards. That means that no matter whether you hit your local Starbucks or favorite restaurant, if they offer wireless charging, your Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge will be able to take advantage of the charging mat.
The new video has singer/songwriter/actress sensation, Rita Ora, on her way to the studio to lay down a few tracks when her new Samsung Galaxy S6 alerts her to its low battery life. No problem, Rita Ora will be working anyway, so she lays down her shiny new Galaxy S6 on a Samsung charging pad and goes about her business of singing. When finished, she picks up her Galaxy S6 and looks at the battery indicator showing 63-percent charged – she grabs it and off she goes. She must have had a short work day because the advert does show in small print at the bottom that it takes about 180 minutes (3 hours) to charge from zero to a full charge. Wireless charging is always slower that plugging the device directly into a wall socket using the microUSB port – Samsung’s engineered battery in the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge can charge as fast as 4 hours in only 10 minutes when plugged in and turned off or up to a 100-percent charge in about 70 minutes.
Samsung made several bold design changes and one of them was to do away with their longtime removable battery. Not only did Samsung forgo the removable battery, but they actually decreased the size as well to only 2550mAh in the Galaxy S6 or 2600mAh in the S6 Edge…this was to help make the device as thin as they could. It also showed Samsung’s confidence in their design to reduce battery consumption with their new 14nm processor technology, DDR4 RAM and new UFS 2.0 Flash Memory. By allowing the user to ‘quick charge’ their battery or wirelessly charge it while they worked, were at the airport or out at a commercial establishment that offers wireless charging, they felt confident enough to include the smaller battery.
