The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are Samsung’s two new flagship devices that were both released not too long ago. Of course, users who purchased one of these devices would assume that it would be compatible with Google’s latest take on the car entertainment system, Android Auto. Unfortunately, those users assumption would be wrong, up until today that is.
It looks as though an update to Google Play Services, that began its rollout this morning, adds support for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. This means that if you happen to own either of these two Samsung devices, then you can now use them with your Android Auto head unit. Before this update to Google Play Services began its rollout, if users tried to pair a Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge with an Android Auto head unit they would be greeted with a red alert screen. Said screen would detail to the user that their device was not compatible with Android Auto as of yet.
Samsung’s two newest flagship smartphones aren’t the only unexpected devices that had issues with Android Auto. Currently, the LG G3 doesn’t support Android Auto, even after the Android Lollipop update. Also, the Samsung Galaxy S5 on Verizon still does not support Android Auto officially. But there is no need to fret, all of these OEMs, as well as Google, are all aware of this and are more than likely working on fixes to get these devices supported.
So, what about newer smartphones that actually support Android Auto? Well, there’s some good news on that front as most of the major device manufacturers flagship devices currently support Android Auto. The HTC One M8 and M9, 2014 Moto X, Nexus smartphones, and now the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge all support Android Auto officially. Of course, there are other devices that are compatible with Android Auto that were not mentioned in this article, the devices mentioned above are just some of the bigger ones. At the same time, there are a lot of devices that are not compatible with Android Auto. Due to this, we urge you to check if your device supports Android Auto before you fork out the money for a head unit.
