If you’re one of those that was lucky enough to get your hands on a Project Tango invite to buy Google’s Project Tango tablet that costs $1024, well you should be getting an email soon – if you haven’t already – that it’s half off now. Dropping the price down to $512. Still a bit steep for a tablet, but it does have some crazy specs. It has a 7-inch 1920×1200 resolution display, NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor along with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. That’s a crazy amount of storage for a tablet though. But given what the tablet is for, that’s understandable.
Google’s Project Tango can do 3D motion and feature tracking. It also has Integrated depth sensing. It’s great for mapping, and definitely something really interesting here from Google.
The email that developers are getting today also says that they are planning to open up sales more broadly. We’re not exactly sure what Google means by that. Possibly to more developers, as we don’t see this heading to the Google Store anytime soon. But we did see Google Glass open up and become available to more people over time as well. So Project Tango Development kit is likely going to be the same way.
Whether you buy the tablet for its intended purpose, or just to have a tablet with those specs and that storage, that’s still a pretty good price considering what all you get. Now if we could just get all tablets to come with 128GB of storage out of the box. However, you do still need an invite to be able to buy one. It is listed on the new Google Store, but it does say that the device is not available for sale at this time.
It’s a great kit for those developers that are interested in the future, and interested in 3D motion and depth sensing. Intel has actually done a little bit of work with this recently, which we see on the Dell Venue 8 7000 that was shown off at CES 2015. So it is definitely the future. The possibilities with 3D motion and depth sensing are endless, basically, as well.
