Last year’s Galaxy Note 4 (pictured above) shipped with a Quad HD display, which was packed with a display resolution of 2560 x 1440 which works out as four times the amount of pixels as a display with a resolution of 1280 x 720. This Quad HD display technology has made it into smaller devices, with the likes of the DROID Turbo and the newly announced HTC One M9+ features 5.2-inch displays packed with Quad HD resolutions. Now, there are rumors swirling that the Galaxy Note 5 could feature a large display packed with a 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160, as well as another variant with a dual-edge display similar to the Galaxy S6 Edge.
PhoneArena has been passed a tip that suggests Samsung is ready to ship the Galaxy Note 5 in two versions, a regular version with a 5.89-inch display of 3840 x 2160 giving it a pixel density of 748ppi. If that figure wasn’t dizzying enough, the rumor goes on to say that the dual-edge version of the device will feature a slightly smaller 5.78-inch display giving it a ridiculous pixel density of 768ppi. This information does line up with Samsung’s plans to produce such dense Super AMOLED displays for 2015 and while mass production of these displays is about to start in August, we have to wonder just whether or not there’s really a need for 4K displays on smartphones. If Samsung can deliver a quality Super AMOLED display using a Diamond pixel arrangement along with the 4K resolution, then great! However, it would be a terrible shame if the qualities of Samsung’s Super AMOLED display were pushed aside just to reach a higher pixel density.
Right now of course, this is just a rumor, and there’s no telling whether or not Samsung will actually launch a Galaxy Note 5 with a 4K display, but it’s nice to think of what’s to come. With the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge to go on sale all over the world this weekend, it looks like 2015 is about to kick off in earnest for Samsung, and we might be a long way off from the launch of the Galaxy Note 5, but we have to think Samsung is already getting ready for another big launch.
