Samsung is not just Samsung Mobile, or Samsung Electronics. As we covered a little while ago Samsung is a lot of things to a lot of people, and it’s a new generation of owners that are taking the Samsung Group to new heights. Samsung Display is one of the larger, more important cogs in the wheel that is the Samsung Group, and it’s going through something of a change, as the company separates the company into main divisions. One that takes care of OLED, Organic LED displays, and another in charge of more traditional LCD displays. Many Samsung fans will know what makes their Super AMOLED displays different to others, but otherwise OLED is a self-lit technology, meaning there’s no need for a backlight as there is with LCD displays.
This move is perhaps going to mean more for the TV industry than it is the mobile world, but it’s an interesting move. For years now, the Super AMOLED displays in devices like the Galaxy S, the Galaxy Note and even the Galaxy Tab S line of products have helped separate Samsung devices from the pack. For many, it’s this OLED technology that makes Samsung devices so appealing, and this separation of Samsung Display could be a sign that Samsung is looking to push OLED technology to new heights. Business Korea is reporting that this separation is to do with marketing resources and the ability to help those in charge of each technology better focus on meaningful campaigns, however this could be a sign that Samsung is ready to move into larger OLED displays, like those used in TVs.
OLED has been a technology that many have been waiting for, and while we’ve been promised OLED TVs, they’re still few and far between. Now with the likes of Android TV and 4K becoming the new standard, Samsung could use this new focus in OLED to take the industry by storm. Over time, we could see changes in the way Samsung markets the new technology and whether or not this has an effect on the mobile side of things is something we’ll have to wait and see about. Let’s not forget that OLED is needed to create flexible displays, like the one used in the Galaxy S6 Edge.
