All or most of last year’s flagship devices from the biggest manufacturers have started to receive the updates to Android Lollipop through some of the carriers around the globe, but not all carriers have released the updates for the latest Android version software to some of the biggest selling smartphones of 2014. One of those carriers is US Cellular, who had yet to push out the software updates for the Samsung Galaxy S5 on their network. As of today, it seems that’s all about to change for users on the network now that US Cellular has started the update process for the Galaxy S5 moving it forward to Android 5.0.1.
There are still other devices that have yet to receive Lollipop on other carriers of course, like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Sony Xperia Z3 on T-Mobile’s network, but those devices too will receive Lollipop in due time, and hopefully sooner than later. For Samsung Galaxy S5 owners on US Cellular, the process is relatively simple and the update can be handled in one of two different ways, either through the over-the-air update or through the desktop using the Samsung Kies software and a connection of the device to the desktop through a USB cable. The OTA is obviously a little more convenient as all that’s needed is to navigate to the “about phone” section of the settings menu and tap the software updates section, which should then display an available update and a button to confirm going forward with the process.
The second process requires users to have access to a PC, and have the Samsung Kies software installed as it will handle the update through a series of on-screen prompts while the phone is connected via the USB cable. Either process should take close to the same amount of time unless you have a slow connection to the internet and the software update package takes a while to download. At this point, most users should be familiar with what comes included with the update, like lock screen notifications, heads up notifications when the screen is unlocked and on, more vibrant use of color and lively animations per the material design guidelines, just to name a few things.
