If there was ever any doubt from anyone anywhere about the upcoming Google Photos application, those doubts now have good reason to subside as it appears that first look screenshots of the app’s design, as well as a partial description of some of the app’s functionality have surfaced today. Google has all but officially come forward and stated “here is the new Google Photos app,” but these screenshots are about as convincing as they get without any official confirmations. Having said that, there is no guarantee that Google won’t decide to change some things in the future before the app’s release.
Short of the new look, which is much more striking visually than the photos section of Google+ currently, Google Photos is overflowing with Material Design, and it will have a new feature that lets you drag your finger around the screen to select multiple images for batch copies, deletion etc. This makes for a much easier time selecting a grouping oh photos as it just feels more natural and streamlined than long pressing and tapping on each individual image to select a handful of photos. Upon opening up the new application users will be greeted with a series of instructions just like they are with a number of other Google apps, like a tutorial of sorts.
While the apps design is new (this includes the photo editing screen which Google has somewhat redesigned), functionality appears to be a very similar experience to the Photos within Google+. According to Android Police, much of the same capabilities will be included in Google Photos like searching for images based on certain criteria, as well as automatic photos backup. When it comes to new additions being introduced, Google will be inserting new ways to view your collections of photos, with sorting options like month view and day view and a new option called comfortable view. It seems Google will also be giving users new creation tools and lumping them all into the new “Assistant” feature, (assistant is to take the place of auto-awesome) which will introduce the capability to take various collections of photos and turn them into things like albums, movies, stories, animations or collages. Since this is an early look at something which has yet to be released, there is no detail on when we might see an official launch of the app, but those are details which the public could very well learn about this week.
